figuring head loss

I've got a pump that has a max head of 23 ft.. I need to go over 40 ft. but it's almost all a flat run (pipe only rises about five feet on one end).

Do I include the horizontal length when figuring the head loss or just the vertical? IE do I have 40 ft. of head loss or just five (the vertical rise)?

Yes you will need to calculate the horizontal distance as well. Go here and you can use the calculator. It will ask you for all the pertinant information.
