Unusual tank design

I can't decide if this is the coolest idea ever, or a huge disaster in the making....

Its also a check valve based plumbing design, which I would not trust. And talk about evaporation!!! The thing is a swamp cooler! Looks pretty cool though

I guess the only way to do that safely would be to run the return pretty close to the surface and drill siphon breaks at the top (would that work?). You could direct the returns downward with loc-line fittings I suppose. If you arranged the rockwork around that central tower of plumbing it wouldn't look too bad.

It just occured to me that I'd be scraping algae from double the normal surface area! So much for that idea...

Redmond Reef had an overflowing tank at MACNA. Pictures can be seen on the following page:

Scoll down to "The Overflowing Tank" section.

I had thought about this when thinking about HOB overflows and the overflowing possibiliities and also looking at some wall fountains. I thought, why not just have your tank be a controlled overflow? But there were so many variables... It could be coral only, as livestock would be constantly jumping ship, as Op said, you'd be scraping coralline AND algea from BOTH sides of the glass, evaporation, salt creep, etc. etc.

But it would be so cool!

Snails cruising on the outside too, causing water to splash off of them....
Also, you need a good amount of flow to verflow all sides at once.
Use the Francis formula to figure it out. I have to find that formula.

Like I posted in the other forum, somebody with high turnover on a large reef tank could plumb it between their overflow and their sump. That way it doesn't need check valves any more.

I've been thinking about doing this. My idea was to place a submerged standpipe deep in my overflow to feeds the clam tank. The rest of the overflow would be handled by a durso. That way, no bubbles in the clam tank.

The mag9/mag12 in those links are probably doing 700-1000gph after head loss. So anyone using a 70rlt or stronger would have excess flow.

Now, I just have to convince my wife...
