Mollie ?
I am swapping my 180 to an aggressive sw tank and want to cycle with mollies as the will serve for future food. Do you have to QT them since they are coming from FW? Can any unwanted parasite or bacteria transfer also?

You might as well just add a week or two to the time it takes to convert them to freshwater in the QT. You will need to take a good week or more to go from fresh to full salt. It wont hurt anything to QT them but I would think that there should be less of a risk coming from freshwater.

Any parasites living on FW fish cant live in SW.

My friend converted a molly from full fresh to full salt in a couple hours. The molly was fine, and actually colored up more in the salt water after a few days.

I know this sounds a bit brutal to some, but you can simply net the mollies and toss them into the saltwater tank. If I'm not mistaken from what I've read wild mollies travel between fresh and saltwater almost daily and do it in a matter of minutes. I've done this on 3 different occasions to cycle tanks and to keep the fish so that their babies would be a food source and I didn't lose a single one. The increase in salinity will kill any FW parasites, bacteria, and fungi; so quarantine is unnecessary. Mollies actually live much better lives in saltwater and the majority of molly deaths in the home aquaria are because they are so vulnerable to FW diseases such as bacterial and fungal fin rot. So even if you lose one (which I highly doubt will happen as mollies are very hardy) they're still only a 2 dollar fish and they can always be replaced.

I acclimated my mollies over 3 hours w/o a single death. I also do not believe there is a significant chance of any bacteria or infection surviving the tranfser, though i wouldn't promise anything.

I've done it before but was curious about the unknown.

It took 3 hours for me to acclimate my FW mollies to SW. But as soon as I put other fish in, they got ich very badly. I don't think they had any immunities to it. I had to take them out and put them back into FW. That cured them, but I haven't put them back in the SW yet.
