lighting

hello anthony,

i just figured that i'd ask the most knowledgeable person that i'm familiar with. i'm just starting out in this magnificent hobby and am on a shoe-string budget, i have two small children. i have perfecto 44 gallon pentagon tank with a 24" coralife aqualight on it. the tank is also 24" deep. well here is my question i recently bought a green hammer coral and a pulsing xenia. after acclimation the hammer never opened up again and by the second day the xenix looked all shriveled up. i tested my water parameters and everything came back normal. when i broght these dead animals back to the lfs thgey gave me a full credit, but i really don't want to deal with them anymore. after dicussingt my tank setup with them, they told me that my lighting was very inadequate for any type of coral. now at coral reef aquarium in seekonk, mass they said that my lighting was o.k.
any information on this matter or suggestions that you have will be greatly appeciated.

thank you for your time.

i am not anthony but it is my experience that to adequately light a 24" deep tank, you would want a min of 175w mh and my personal favorite is 250w for a 24" deep tank.

as for your pc question, it may not be enough as most 24" pc bulbs are about 65w.

your set up may work IF you decide to place your corals pretty close up at the surface and provide good 'dispersed' flow around them. in my opinion, i would not put much corals at the bottom at the moment except maybe some mushrooms which are a little more low light tolerant.

reefing generally is considered an expensive hobby (and is as you want it to be) but great used equipment at a very good price can be found on the used equipment sorum. just research what you want and wait (with a lot of return visits and quick responses to buy the things).

when i first started reefing (as a starving students) pc's served my 10g wonderfully...but now with the increased performance of metal halides, increased use and better production methods...their prices, while still considered high, have become pretty reasonable and is the best way to go for reefers in it for the long term (my opinion).

hope this helps!
