Dsb, Ssb, Bb Or Starboard Great Debate

Hello fellow reefers

EVERYONE

seems to have a opinion about the type of substrate or lack of for their tank. Some prefer one thing, some the others. Some have tried one and others 2 or more. I myself have crush coral, with a DSB on top of that and I like it because of the aesthetics (looks). Looks more natural to me, IMO.

When I first got into this hobby, it was more of a crush coral hobby. Then came the Jaubert style, then a combination of that, and now a big skimmer and plenty of movement, closed systems, and a combo of them too. It's a endless cycle of reef tank evolution. It appears that whatever works for you it what works for you.

But, when I read some of the threads, it appears that the issue is just how things look, not so much the effects on the tank overall. If you have SPS, you want a certain type of bottom, and if you have softies you want something else. And if you just want more water movement you want another. But, the waters where most of what we have in our tanks have sand, PLENTY of it. And seems to me that it has worked best that way for ions.

But, just for the sake of a good debate, WHY did you really choose the bottom you chose? And why does it work for you?

Sorry about the debate,

maybe because I'm thinking of starting another debate thread, lol,. No, really because of lot of newbies look at the threads and their confused by all we post. Maybe if there was thread where they could find out why people chose the bottom they chose. The choice they make would be simplier and centered around what they hope to really do with their tank.

RevClyburn, not starting problems, lol

Maybe some of you can post some pics of your tank(s) so that other can see why you chose that bottom

Hey Rev,

BB, cause I don't like surprises, I'm lazy, and I can control how clean or dirty it is and change that in a matter of minutes if I need to.

And, to save this guy...

After 15 months in a shallow-sandbed tank it looked like this:

Four months of being in a bare-bottom tank and it recovered to this:

And, to turn my 180 from this:

To this:

And, to prevent my astrea snails from dying. Something about sand turns off their “righting reflex.

I really think that there was more to the "before" pictures than just a sand bed problem...... Too easy to blame sand for poor husbandry........That algae was out of control for more than a sucky sand bed...... ( IMO )

There is no debate...only opinions. Either way good husbandry is required.

Husbandry, come on!

Sand beds flux phophate. How does good husbandry help solve that. Its nature that set that up.

They research ocean stuff. Bomber for example specializes in phophate burps.

Weatherman, for example knows just how and where sand flows. I bet you dont...

Not to be argumental

look at their occupations

metorologist
doctor of marine biology and pathobiology
You gotta give them some sort of credit......

Plus I have read the scientifc journals that show how sand works And the evidence is all there.
