clam separated

Hey guys,
New member here. Have had 2 blue giant clams for a year now and just noticed something. Just under the mantle the shell seems to be coming unglued. The top two "layers" are separating from the rest of the shell and sticking out like raised collars. Don't know if i have missed this or if its something new. They open wide and seem to be healthy otherwise. Have metal halide pendant. Corrals and polyps are fine. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'll take a guess that you have a wild collected crocea that had a very smooth shell. The reason that shell is smooth is becuase in the wild the scutes (things that stick out like collars) are usually worn away when the clam burrows into rock. Now that your clam is in your tank, sitting on the sand or on top of a rock the newly grown scutes are not getting worn away. So what you are seeing is new growth on your clams shell and it's a good thing.
