Hippo Tang In a 75 Please Don't be too harse !

Like the title entitles( hehe) I may be getting a hippo for my 75. I want a really nice "show" fish and I see that could be it. I know I will get the never ending attacks about why that is too small. If you look at it the diff. between a standard 75 and a standard 100 is the 5inch increase in height I don't think that is extreme vital to the fish. Anyway comments or personal experience I'm ready.

I'm not being harsh or anything, but there is a lot of people that consider 100g too small. I think a lot of people think you should have at least a 6ft long tank for hippos.

I kept a 2-3 inch Hippo tang in my 55g for about a year before I moved it into my 125g. If you plan on keeping this fish for a while please look at upgrading to at least a 6 foot long tank. I know the fish completely change once I moved it into the larger tank. Even my 125 is too small for it now. Im getting an 8 foot 240g. I personally think you made an irresponsible, and selfish choice in this matter. Youre right that extra height is not important but the length is. They can get rather large, they love to eat all the time, they love to poop even more. Once they get big and feel cramped they start to become nasty to other tank makes.

At least you know what you could be in for with this question. I think a 75 is fine for a smaller BT. But if you want to keep a BT into adulthood and for the long haul, then you'll want to start thinking about a larger tank down the road.

Height isn't as important as length of the tank to a BT, but more swimming space is always better.

How long is the 75 and how big is the Hippo?

I bought my Hippo last year when it was tiny, like the size of a quarter. Here we are a year later and this thing has grown to almost 5". I will be moving him to a 180, (hopefully a 240G) in December.. so I guess the answer is yes you can keep a tiny one in a 75............ BUT after a year or whenever they pass the 5" mark, you definitely have to upgrade to a 6FT tank or bigger.

.. the same thing goes for other active swimmers: Anthias, Large angels, etc

I wouldnt really consider a Hippo in such a small tank. I have a school in a 32 foot long tank and they seem restless sometime, and they defintly poop a lot so you will want a really nice protein skimmer.

yeah froggy i want to see that tank too!

black_majikn i have a 135 gallon tank that is 6 foot long I am even hesitant to get a blue tang because they get soo large. I am wanting the yellow belly but gotta keep in mind they get 12" long. I have concerns about putting one in my tank i wouldn't recommend doing it in a tank your size UNLESS you get a small one and you know beyond the shadow of a doubt you are going to be able to upgrade to accommodate their size and need for swimming room pretty quick.
