Angel's and other tank mates info:

Hello everyone,

I am looking for some feedback and input on angelfish.

I am setting up a 220 fish only and would like to get a angelfish.
I read marine fishes and kinda narrowed it down to the list below:
queen angel or blue angel
french angel
koran angel
poss. a emperor
If anyone has raised any of these could you please give me some info.
which would be best for someone that has never trieds to raise one.
how hard is it to get them to eat -- probably will be ordering it offline
Can it live with a dogface puffer(black spotted or masked),threadfin, and maybe a niger trigger -- not sure about the tigger more than likely I will go with a tang.

Thanks

Most larger angel species will eat well

Some exceptions are (of course besides the regal):

Blue Ringed --moderately difficult
The Hawaiin Black Banded (H. arcuatus)

You can have two large species angels, but best is that they differ greately in size, say 6-7" and 1.5-2". The smaller fish should be introduced first and a lot of hiding places just large enough for the smaller fish but too small for the larger one should be provided. The smaller one better be the more aggressive species.

In a 220, perhaps two similar sized angels of different shape and color would get along after a while, but is somewhat more chancy. I would chance it only for the less aggressive species.

Kewl thank you for the feed back. I don't think I will take the risk and put 2 angles in the same tank, but I appreciate the heads up.

Thanks again,

having two angels of vastly different sizes works frequently.

A six inch majestic (tamer) and a 2 inch juv blue face would likely work in a 120, not to mention 240.

I had no problem getting my emperor to eat. She's a pig and eats just about anything she can. She also is tolerant of tankmates.
I only have experience with emps. so I wouldn't know much about the others.

sokin, when I first set up my 220 FO years ago I added a Blue Face which was a disaster. It was very timid, got harassed by yellow tangs, didn't eat and died.

After that experience I did alot of reading, changed to FOWLR, and wanted a hardy angel. I have a passer which is one of the toughest angels out there.

A passer could work well in your tank, or off your list the french or koran.

Thank you all for the info. I still have a few months till I start purchasing any fish which gives me awhile to continue to do my homework and narrow down my list to which two out of the four angels I will get.
I know for sure I want a :
blue angel or queen angel but leaning toward the blue since the queen sounds like she likes to throw down with tank mates.

I think I will pass on the Emperor (due to large individual are sometimes poor feeders and are susceptible to a variety of parasites) -- from marine fishes.

The french I think I will pass due to its size and the same for the koran.

Passer may be a good choice and I will have to do some reading on them.

Thanks again.

Well I think I have my fish wish list complete:

Miniatus grouper
Queen Angel
Blue Jaw Trigger
Convict Tang
Raccoon Butterfly

I wanted a dogface puffer, but I think to cut down on the bio load and add little more color I picked the convict and raccoon.

I'd pass on the miniatus and possibly the trigger. Great fish, but you can't keep cleaner shrimp in the tank. My large angel LOVES to be cleaned.

Maybe look into a sargassum or crosshatch trigger. Or even a pair. I'd also get a dwarf angel in there with some nice wrasses.

A few thoughts, if fish size is truly an issue you need to know the queen and blue angels get larger than almost all of the other angels you mentioned and are among the most aggressive. I think you have plenty of tank for two angels if you really want them but you have to be careful with the introduction. Also know that the tank should ideally be up and running for a good amount of time before you add an angel. HTH

the butterfly might not be tough enough for the mix...
