Skimmer pump question

How can I tell how much flow my skimmer needs to work? It is 2.5 feet tall, chamber is 5" or so across. Outlet is only a 3/4".

IME a MJ 1200 is not enough.

Are needlewheel style pumps better?

Sorry skimmer newb, I used to use only refugiums.

i think a ocean runner 2700 would be great.. or a cheaper octopus 2000 pump.. they are pretty nice.
