my 100 percent airtight tank
well. im going to try and get picts for you eventualy
but about a month ago i filled a jar with saltwater ,sand a piece of lr rubble and a zoanthid and sealed it ( no pump no water exchange no nothing) just a single t5 light it sits under at the back of the invert system at work well amonth later. zoa's are still alive and open once in a while but i have tiny jelly fish showing up micro serpent stars tube worms and of course copepods. anyone else ever try this.. iv seen lil sealed 'eggs' with brine shrimp that lasted about 5 years how long do you htink till this crashes?

cool experiment... I'd say the longevity depends on whether there is any algae in there to oxygenate the water... A month so far is pretty impressive. pics wold be cool!

That sounds Cool!! Pictures!!!! I might have to try something similar to that experiment. Aptaisa(only because I have three small zoa frags), Chaeto, LR , and a micro hermit no special light just sitting on my desk at work.

You can actuall buy something like this. Its called Eco-Sphere. It has algea and tiny shrimp with a little bit of air sealed in a solid glass ball. Its its own tiny environment and only needs light

sort of like a winogradsky column - I've seen a couple that were more than 20 years old

My concern with sealed systems that don't allow for water changes is the removal of biochemicals and hormones released by the inhabitants. Circulation is also helpful to a zoanthid to remove waste products and mucus from the polyps. Impressive that it is still alive, but I suggest returning it to the tank. Since it is not staying opened as usual, it is probably getting stressed. No need to kill it.

I have an eco-sphere that was a Christmas gift 8 years ago. still going strong. It got cracked and evaporated about 25% of the water until I sealed it up with scotch tape about 5 years ago. It lives in the pot of a large house plant, I only see it about once every 6 months but it is still a very cool experiment.

the zoas are 3 polyps of a zoa i was trying to kill of anyways ( takes over the sps tank)
everything else seems fine yeah wont remove some cemical build up but cemicals should break down eventualy.. thats the point of the experiment

Neat. Did you leave some air at the top too? What's the temp?

Those Eco Sphere things with the volcanic shrimp are cruel. The shrimp is slowly starving. Just because you can do something does not me you should IMO.

What do you mean the shrimp are starving? http://www.eco-sphere.com/aboutecosphere.htm My brother and I both have one, mine has been going for 3 years? as long as they have algea, they wont starve.
