help me do the math

ok, i'll admit it, i'm a court t.v. junkie. a woman in new jersey was convicted of murdering her husband. she poisoned him with arsenic, dismembered his body and threw his pieces in a river somewhere.

she was sentenced to life in prison. she will be eligible for parole after she's served 85% of her sentence.

how is that gonna work? who's gonna determine when she's served 85%? does somebody have a crystal ball somewhere shutupmenofthelounge that will let the powers that be know when 85% of the rest of her life is up?

I still need someone to explain to me how someone can shoot her husband with a shotgun while he is laying in bed, and not even serve a year in jail.

50 years I believe is the maximum amount of time that any jail in the US is allowed to hold a prisoner without the possibility of parole.

Our legal system and prisons are too busy locking away all the serious criminals, drug users. They can't be burdened with petty crimes like murder and rape.

I dont' think that is it at all. Plenty of murderers and rapists are behind bars. The difference is that most of them aren't young, pretty white women.

That kind of stuff blows my mind. Why bother calling it a life sentence then?

How about we build a Penal colony really really north in Canada and send all the Lifers there. Kinda like Georgia way back when, or Australia....... Oh, and send them in shorts and T-shirts.....yeah, thats the ticket.

someone said it already - life in the US is like 35 years I think (batpoop knows more i'm sure) thats why you hear senteances like 3 life terms served consecutivly that way they actually get life in prison.

That one really gets to me. If I remember right, he wasn't just lying in bed, he was sleeping, right?

now see, I think we should salt away graffiti artists and petty shoplifters for about 40 years...that's gratuitous attitude, unprovoked.
I think however if you shoot someone you know---or are related to---the available relatives and friends of the shootee ought all to serve on the jury, and if the majority agree with you---you walk. Down in the county I grew up in---that would have let a lot out on the street.

Manson has already been up for Parole 11 times. Not bad for someone who was originally sentenced the death. The fact that animal is still breathing air is testiment to how messed up the criminal justice system is.

Court TV has a couple of cool show that are not court based. One is called Miami water cops or something. Basically you take an ocean, add boats and idiots. Mix with a generous helping of alcohol and its more fun than a bug zapper and a 6 pack!
