how's kalk work for a 54 with corals? My experience so far...

After 1 month on a kalk reactor, my alk is a steady 9.4 and my cal is 410. Running like a top, and no problems. Mg. is a little elevated at about 1500. I'm supplementing a little strontium, a little iodine, weekly---my corals are happy with that so far. Water changes. All ok.

I used to have to test and supplement daily. Now it's check the chemistry once a week and so far so good, holding steady. I do watch the mg, but not until I see a drop in alk and cal.

I'm really liking this kalk business. I use a BAS reactor driven by my autotopoff.com float-switch and pump combo, with a Hanna stirrer. Hose it down and fill it once every two months and I'm in business.

Well, I'll tryr: my camera's got problems, but I have a few:

THe first one shows the belowstairs rig without the [2 feet tall] kalk rig, which runs from the topoff tub, [gray] and the second one shows a pretty representational look at my tank before I moved, after which I have only a few pix---but those are the kind of corals I keep, big euphyllias, some montiporas, a clam, and will have more acroporas. Sorry for the second pix not being current, but it's the most representational of the way it looks now that I can come up with. I lost the mushrooms and pocillopora in the move, but the hammer and frog are now 2x their former size, ditto the caulestra and fox coral. I've fragged off the montiporas and am starting with little ones.

Your tank is looking fantastic sk8r! Have you noticed any detrimental effects from the mag that high? My mag is a bit high at the moment is why I'm asking....

1500 ppm isn't high.It may sound high most people keep it at 1300-1400ppm.Most of the mag test kits max at 1500 ppm.Depending on how fast your corals grow plus how many you have kalk may not be enough to sustain levels. In my tank kalk kept the ph in check but didn't raies my cal or keep my alk levels high enough.I was forced to use Randy's two part

my 54 has been kalked for 100% of top off plus a calcium reactor running non stop for almost a year.
