New Bangaiis
I just received my bangaii pair from inland aquatics. I finally broke down and spent the $90 on them. :-)
They are acclimating now. They're awfully little buggers. I asked Morgan at IA how they tell male from female and he said they let the two fish pair up in a group and then remove them and keep them as a pair. Seeing as how small they are it will likely be several months before I see any mating behavior, but I'm pretty excited right now! |

$90 for a pair!!! Wow that is amazing. Looks like all the locals around me are getting killer deals...
How old is this pair? 5 months? If they are any younger, I'd be skeptical about the legitimacy of their claim. Not saying they are wrong, just skeptical.

I have 5 babies at a month now....looks like waiting for them to pair up is the way to go.

Not that I have seen. The approximate age is one of the first things I asked. :-) They ate the first night they were in the tank.
Seem to prefer Mysids over blood worms. This is what Inland Aquatics has to say about wild caught bangaiis and their captive bred ones. We have (TR) juvenile pairs of Banggai Cardinals @ $89.99. This is the first time that we have offered (TR) Banggias in a couple of years. This is due to the same nematode infection that has been killing nearly 100% of wild caught Banggai for several years. Some wild caught broodstock transferred this affliction to our culture tanks before is it was identified, killing 90% of our cultured Banggai in late 2001. WE HAVE NOT SEEN WILD CAUGHT BANGGAI THAT SURVIVE MORE THAN ABOUT 10 DAYS AFTER IMPORT SINCE THAT TIME. (WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND AGAINST PURCHASING WILD CAUGHT BANGGAI CARDINALS FOR THIS REASON) As such, it took a very long time to build our numbers up. I asked a lot of questions before ordering and they were really good about answering every one of them. They were packed up at about 4PM and arrived at my door about 9AM the next morning. |

I've had them breed at 5 months of age. I know this sounds young but it was amazing. I kept 7 of my juvenilles and a pair formed at that young of age. The male never held till term though. I ended up selling them as a pair for$60. I have paired up several pairs. I never sold them as a pair until they were actually breeding and I knew it was a male. I bought a "pair" several years ago on line..captive rasied. Not from IA but somwhere else and after a year of no breeding I discovered my pair was two females.

Females will tolerate eachother for years. I had an extra female in with my breeding pair in a 90 gallon tank for 3 years. One day the odd fish out went nuts and attacked my breeding female nearly killing her. I figured ok... she just wanted her chance to breed. 15 days later after the male released she decided to kill him in the night... I promptly removed her to a QT tank with a pair of mated ocellaris and figured I would leave her there until I could find a home for her... 2 weeks later she was not eating anymore and develpoed Amyloo out of the blue ( no new un QT'd stock in any of my systems for 2 years...) killing herself and the male of my mated ocellaris pair.... So I guess I learnt why you never keep more than a single pair of bangaii in one tank no matter how large it is...
