Vinny wouldn't touch it for less than a grand. Said it looked mean and asked if it would bite. What a wussy!

After next week I should be able to look to do some custom DIY rocks. Then we'll see what's possible for J's tank.

Did you see this J?

Nice thread. That's a lot like what I did for my FW planted tank. You can see pics of that in my gallery...I would have to say though, that making the rock like you are planning and forming it in place like he used the foam would probably be better for the system's health.

Red Spot Cardinals are awesome. I thought maybe if you had to do a fish list over, I would suggest PTB school of 5.

With the splashing idea, you may run into problems where the water level rises too high and splashes over your tank, and onto the floor. It is a very cool idea, but it must be done with a lot of height to spare.

Unless of course you have an acrylic tank with a nice wide lip around it.

My tank has a massive euro-brace on it. I doubt any water will go over the side, but that remains to be seen. I have also considered building a surge tank, but since my skimmer is gravity fed directly from my overflow, I don't think large surges are too good of an idea.

I can't believe the Turd gets no respect. You are all A-Holes!!!!!

Almost forgot...Jonathan that is one AWESOME turd!

You know, if you built one of those surge devices with the toilet flapper then you'd really have something to go with that turd.

That is one impressive turd!

... I'd love to see you go with several shoals of smaller cardinal fish like blue eye, red spots, orange lines and the like with a big shoal of lyre tail anthias ... in that big space ... breath taking!

OK, OK...so maybe I am a little too proud of my turds, but it's all I got!

On the shoaling fish, I would really like 40 - 50 red spots, but I am concerned about how long they would live. I put 12 mollys in the tank about 4 weeks ago and they are all gone. I saw the maroon grab one and feed it to a GBTA...

what about a school of 40-50 purple firefish? Given how difficult it is to find red spot cardinals.

firefish like to fly. and fry. and die.

I had a fish freak last night and I almost lost a lamp. and do firefish really school? That's the real question!

None of these fish actually school in captivity unless you are managing a multi-thousand gallon system. Chromis will school for a while until their system of genetic thinning takes hold and they kill each other off.

The glass cardinalfish Don mentions actually do school in captivity in large systems, but I would prefer the red spots just for aesthetic reasons.

Anthias are a whole different issue, in that they are supremely beautiful fish (IMO) but do require extra attention. During the start-up phase of my tank, I fed 3x/day but now only once in the evening, and this is not conducive to long-term success with anthias.

I can't see maintaining a large school of anthias, and like I mentioned, I want a school of 40 -50 small fish to ebb and flow in the current created by the Vortechs. I may not get to my goal, but I am certainly not interested in marginally schooling fish.

I hope that everyone understands that with my experience to date, and lots of input form other accomplished reefers, I am actually very selective in what I am wiling to add to my system, other than certain "rescue" situations. OK, to be a bit more concise...I want the red spots dammit!

You need to check out these! I wanted 5 or 7 of them. They just got them in stock and I don't have the means to get them now... To busy getting other stuff done, so I'll have to wait for the next shipment in a year

Hopster! Nice to see you! I have looked iinto them but from my research I am doubting that they school much. They certainly will tend to avoid open areas as by nature they stay very close to cover. But I do like the fact that they appear to establish a formal system of rule within the school, so they are not "off" my list. I haven't had the chance to observe a school of them and that is one of my key measurements.
