well you will only know really the best way to get rid of it when you identify it so, IDing it first is the best to figure out if it is a coral or an algae then you can figure out what to do about it

It sounds like green clove polyps... Do they look like this except they have green? If so, those are green clove polyps. If so most people like them, and consider them to be hard to keep (Ive heard mostly because of shipping) so you can just scrape them off if they turn out to be green clove polyps.. I personally like them.

I second the Clove Polyps. A cross between GSP & Xenia is pretty much exactly what Clove Polyps look like.

If it's growing on a mat, can you peel it off? Is it on a large piece of LR that you can remove and scrub it like crazy, being sure to completely remove all residue lest it return? If worse comes to worse, and it turns out to be those pesky clove polyps, you can frag the rock and trade them to your LFS for credit, or remove the rock completely and let it dry out, killing everything on it, or you can use the baking method for LR. Consider yourself lucky, I think I'm the only person who managed to kill his own colony of clove polyps, and I was actually trying to keep them.
