2 for 1 Algae ID, early growth with pics
Ok everyone I have a challenge. After moving and setting my tank up again I've noticed the emergence of three types of algae that I've never seen in my tank before. One was your standard Derbesia hair algae that is now under control. The other two I have no explanation for, I've never seen them before and I haven't added anything to the tank except a few turbo snails, all the same live rock. One's red, one's green. On with the pics (they're not great, but pretty good for a webcam):
This one is about 5mm top to bottom and has been growing faster and faster, I noticed it a couple of weeks ago. It's definitely soft, not silica based so I don't think it's a sponge. It appears to be forming irregular lobes. The next two pictures are both of what I believe to be one alga species. I've noticed this stuff popping up all over. It starts as a tiny little stiff green "twig" with a strong holdfast, I can't scrub it off with a toothbrush. It looks a bit like a piece of chaetomorpha a few mm long decided to take root. The larger pieces are now forming a round "head" as seen in the pictures. Total size of all of them is 3-5mm. Anyone have any ideas? I'm stumped on the green one, and based purely on photographs I've found online the closest thing I've seen to the red one is the "Nemastoma sp 2" at http://saltcorner.com/sections/guest...Nemastoma2.htm . |

1. pretty hard to ID, especially at this stage, but it looks like algae to me
2. probably not algae, looks more like hydroids or tube worms, but the picture isn't clear enough to tell. 3. could be Acetabularia but the picture again isn't clear enough for me to be sure on that |

Yeah, the problem is that everything is so small at this point, hard to get a good picture, though really those pictures are nearly as clear as looking at the tank directly. A related question: should I remove that red alga now while it's small and attached to a very small piece of live rock or let it grow? I'm certainly curious as to what it could be and I'm inclined to leave it be at the moment, but is there anything that it could be that would be a serious invasion problem if I allow it to grow? I also have a 2.5G tank that I could move it to if that would be considered safer. The green stuff is more of a concern to me since it seems to be spreading pretty quickly.

I agree with ClamIAm exactly.

Question about the "hydroids/tube worms" interpretation... why are they bright green? They do appear to have some sort of hair-like processes near the end, but the color is the same as a green alga.

Picture two is defiantly hydroids but I am unsure of what type exactly.
