Amonia Spike

Hey guys, I just got off the phone with my girlfriend and aparently she had her water tested at the lfs and all levels checked out good except that she got a huge amonia spike. The take has been up for 6 months now with no major porblems. We have not changed anything recently, so I can't figure out what would cause this. Any ideas?

Thank you,
Casey

Did you wipe the front down with windex or any other cleaner? Something big just die?

Ok, she did not wipe the tank down with windex, but she has not seen her anemone for about a week now. I had a feeling that might be what it was. Shes going to get water now from the lfs. What do you recomend as far as water changes. Its a 30g. Also will the cleaner crew take care of the remains or do we have to tare down the whole reef to find him?

20 gallons and a lost anem sounds like a bad case. Maybe a little prime to help with the amm level?

Are any animals showing signs of trouble? If so, some water changes and an ammonia binder like Prime or Amquel might help. Otherwise, the problem might be a bad test kit.

I think we'll give that a try. She's doing a water change tonight and one tomorrow. We'll pick up some prime tomorrow.

Merged a duplicate.

I wouldn't tear down the tank. A series of 7g water changes should help. If other animals are showing signs of trouble, you might try larger changes, but match the SG closely, if so.
