nice fish douglas!
2 mysteries would work in a 100 gallon if they are small and introduced at the same time. Only place in the word that has "flame wrasse" is Hawaii, so i dont know what the "tonga flame wrasse is.." Might be the rosy fin.

The Rosy Fin has been sold by one wholesaler as a "Tonga Flame Wrasse." I would suspect that is what the fish is, a sub-adult male Rosy Fin.

Finally picked up my first fairy wrasse. I believe it is a female Cirrhilabrus rubrimarginatus. Here she is in my QT. I picked her up for only $24. Now I just need to find her a good mate!

well I hate to disagree with you but that fish is a cyanopleura.
The juvenile punctatus aka finespotted fairy is all dark red with brown blended into the red across the body. If you notice on the pictures shane has listed the head coloration stops at about halfway through the wrasses body and its a dark blue-green -brown. After that, the fish is a dark red the rest of the way to the tail. The finespotted juvenile doesn't have a drastic split down the middle of the body as the fish pictured here. A juevnile finespotted has a general red-brown color all the way through. Then you see many light blue polka dots. Really most all fairy wrasses have dots....even this cyanopleura. Sometimes those dots won't show unless the light hits the fish in the right manner.....or in the case of a picture where the photographer is using a flash. But in the punctatus, dots are a tad bit more pronounced. Also there are many variants of finespotted. Scientists now believe that the Vila fairy wrasse....once thought to be a temmincks fairy is actually a variant of the finespotted. I've had both. This fish is without a doubt a juvenile as he has the typical black spot at the tail and the white tip nose. |

Here's the fish I was just refering to. It's sold many times under the name Vila fairy. According to Mr. Tanaka & Richard Pyle it is now being categorized under the punctatus family as a variant.
[/IMG] Here is the other version I have: [/IMG] This guy is a juvenile that's already lost the white tip nose and is rapidly maturing. And there is still another version which can be seen in the link shane has with the word "wrasse" in one of his last posts. I don't have general pictures of juvenile punctatus but in the advanced copy I received of a book Mr. Tanaka is writing he has pictures of true punctatus juveniles. Hopefully maybe someone can dig up pictures of these on the net. |

a lone female wont turn into a male unless there are other females around, and, like previously stated, the social order needs a male. Some females alone are very attractive. I personally love the female flames. They are very attractive. Mine is red pink and some purple
heres a pic of her when i first got it male and female -female on the right side

WOW... you musta spent like 1000$ lol.. nicely spent Those are some beauties though.
Bronco, What are your experiences with male flame wrasses? I have heard that they never last long in captivity (true males) because of some internal parasite (trematodes maybe?) only found in Hawaiian endemic fairies. The symptoms are supposedly, everything is perfect for a couple months, then they stop eating (randomly) and then die shortly there after.... I shipped a supermale a while ago to a friend and it did exactly that - ate like a pig for 2 months, stopped eating then died (but he did have an ICH outbreak in his systems) I have had mine for about 2 1/2 months now. My dad takes care of them and says he greets him at the tank everytime he feeds and he eats like a pig. Im worried that he may die due to these common stmptons of male flames. i also shipped him a pair for a doctors office next door to his LFS, and the same thing happened with the male - great for 2 months, then died... females do great though.. Any thoughts? (anyone can chime in as well) Thanks!
