smith1571,
Based on my experience I would recommend using eggcrate on a tank with Anthias. I once had a male Bartlett's jump out while I was feeding the tank. He wasn't out very long but still died anyway. Anthias often jump when startled and they startle very easily. |

All Anthias Guru's:
Is there a definitive way to distinguish Disbars from Ignitus? I see pics of Disbars that look like Ignitus to me and Ig that look like Disbars? I really want Ig but if I accidently end up with Disbars what are my chances for successfully adding Ig later?

Also, is there a distinguishable visual diff between Disbars from Fiji vs South Pacific in general--other than likely collection practices? THANKS!!

dispar anthias males do not look like ignitus males, ignitus males have a yellow section in the fork of their tail as well as a red dot on the base of their pectoral fins, female ignitus have a bright blue ring around their eyes and lack the yellow in the tails that the males have, they also dont have as noticeable of a dot at the base of their pectoral fins

Got a good pic of my male flavicauda just before lights out. He has been hanging really close to one of the females the last week or so. He is really courting her hard! Her stomach has really bulked up in the last two days. Maybe I'll have a spawn soon?
And here is the girl he's been after |

What can I mix with Tiger Queen Anthias? Any other anthias that will encourage them to come out more? Are these the same as tiger tuka anthias??? Thanks Chris

Mostly I would guess because they get really big...deeper water too, so they can be shy....

I received three anthias a couple days ago. Happy to report that all are eating and seem to be adjusting well. Here are a couple shots of one of them.
These were sold to me as lyretail but this one looks a little different than the pictures I have seen of lyretails. Do you experts think this is infact a lyretail or something else? The colors on this one are beautiful, the pictures from my pocket camera doesn't do it justice. Thanks! |

I think they look like female squarespot anthias.

Thanks for the ID, I was worried about this. Ordered and paid for 3 lyretail females (assuming one would eventually turn to male) but looks like they sent me 3 squarespot females. Beautiful fish though, and healthy so hard to complain.
These get larger than the lyretail, correct? Do you see a problem longterm with them being housed in a 80 gallon? I have a very high flow tank with a huge skimmer but swimming room may become a problem. Here's a pic of two together |

Actually, the 2 preceding pics look exactly like squarespots, but the one in the foreground of this last pic has the tail/fin markings of a lyretail, as well *** the pink hood over the eye and it doesn't have the lateral lines that run all the way back as do the squarespots. I think you might have 2 species, which may still be okay. Lyretails are notoriously aggressive, but they can hold their own. ...Let's see what the Anthias experts (Peter, Carl and Gary) think about this last pic.

Yup, that's alyretail in the foreground, and female squarespot in the background. Squarespot females are easy to ID with the two pink belly lines.
