so i was messing around with a new shroud i built and the results were dramatic. the first one had seven 3/16" inlet slots and the next had seven 1/'4" slots . the later had way way way more flow. so you certainly can choke these if ya don't have enough inlets . however it also makes more noise but I'll let it run a few days and see what happens.

That's how long it is, but it doesn't stop the prop.

There is one more thing that I can think of that is keeping it from stopping (and then reversing) would be the shaft. Could someone post and pic of their shaft (with the prop on it)?

ok, I would like to attempt this mod with my 2 mj 900's, but this thread is so friggin long, is there a step by step on how to do this mod with step by step pictures all in one place?

Or, is there someone that will do this mod for me and I can pay em?

thanks!

Yeah, it starts if I bring it to the surface. I can't post pics (on vacation using the library comp.)

Hey dhnguyen, Are you moving to WA? I noticed a post on RF by a "Smells Fishy" with the same signature as yours.

thanks

One or the other. The stainless steel is smoother and will offer less resistance hence less noise and vibration. Over time though, the cf rod will wear smooth as well.

It's really a personal choice on that one.

You'll probably need to wait until he gets more centering caps in as I know no other place that carries this stuff. The parts for these mods are apparently selling like hot cakes.

The shopping list looks about right.

Yeah the stainless steel rod is generally better in terms of noise and vibration but the caveat is that it is more difficult to work with than the cf rod

-EDIT- you'll need the 3/16" OD rigid tubing as well.

without pics or detailed explanation of how you built it no one is really going to be able to help , cant just say it doesn't work and expect us to know why ; )

If you bring it to the surface of the water and then bring it back down and it runs fine , that tells me that the start up torque is too much. That can mean many things though.

First would be that the prop is to big for the magnet/maxi jet you are using. That can mean that you just put too big a prop on it or it can mean that your maxi jet or magnet just suck.

it can also mean that you have excess friction somewhere. when you take it apart does the impeller spin freely on the shaft ? by freely i mean it spins really freely with almost no drag. when you put it together does the magnet rub on the housing of the maxi jet ? easy way to tell is if you flick the prop with your finger it should jiggle back and forth as it bounces between the magnets. if you don't know what I'm talking about when i say jiggle that means it is not doing it and the magnet is rubbing on the housing.

it could also mean your shaft is bent somewhere or you got excess glue somewhere . maybe the stopper is just positioned poorly .

people have also had the same problem you are having because they don't have enough inlet holes or the housing isn't properly covering the prop... seriously without more info no one can really be of any help.

if it is none of these id just take it apart and rebuild it.

what impeller build you using ? seems allot of people don't want to break apart their impeller to do the new build but i have to say in my experience it works much better. just logically it makes more sense to use one continuous shaft/tube rather than attempt to bond two together with a soft tube. because of the flex between the two there will always be more fiction with that build than with the new one. how much difference will vary from builder to builder.

Rather than 3/16" rigid tubing, have any of you tried the hollow carbon fiber tubing that has a OD of 3/16"?? I know Mcmaster sells it. Seems like the dimensions are right...

i just made some with the .188" tube and .110 rod from here and i liked it .

wish i had ordered the .180" to use with the SS rod or normal CF rod we have been using. I think the .180 might fit in the magnet just a bit better but it is going to depend on the magnet.

Cool, I might try that. Didn't know they made a .180". Mcmaster just sells the .188" Its way cheaper at your linked site as well. I'll probably order both sizes just in case the .180" doesn't work.
