Shell Unhinged?
A few days ago I noticed that something was wrong with my Squamosa clam; the lower section of the shell is 'unhinged' and the two sides of the shell are sitting askew. (Sorry, I'll see if I can download some picts later).
I'm not sure how it happened. I lost a Derasa a month ago to an extended power outtage, but this looks very different. Possibly some evil critter came out at night and attacked it? Some werid parasite? The clams is still alive, and the mantle isn't receded too far. The mantle is brown, and It reacts when I pick it up. Is there any chance it will recover? Anything I can do to help it? Thanks, -Eric |

yikes, doesnt sound promising, but they're pretty capable of recovering. Id make sure that theres nothing bothering the guy for starters - sometimes sequester an injured clam in a tupperware bowl to keep some sand critters away from 'em & feed a lot to keep the strength up. We'll keep fingers crossed for ya.
