Hello Chris - the tank is still up and running fine, I had no hardware problems, however, over the summer the temp sky rocketed, and I lost 99% of my SPS...what a bummer, I added a chiller, and the tank has been recovering, however it is now over run with aiptasia... I see what people mean about these anemones. they breed like crazy. I kill one, and 10 more show up. It saddens me to look at the tank.
I getting ready to add a bunch of bergia nudis to deal with them. |

Too bad the berghias dont reproduce like the damn aiptasia!

ugh.
10 - 20 peppermints... if you can. They will slowly work away at the problem. Patience though, it takes time. Sorry to hear about the gumbo incedent. |

I have put this project back on the web....

However, Im going to move this entire setup to my garage and create an in wall tank, and Im currently researching using Solar tubes instead of MH (PGE is killing me). I also thinking of not using any return pumps, and just using mutiple surge tanks to pump water back into the display. So I essentually have to redesign and rebuild this whole thing. I start a new thread for this on RC. BTW - The tank has been doing very well, with the exception of that aiptasia, everything else is doing well. |

Liar, its not there
 Glad to see your still around Sam! I have thought about using surge-only returns as well. I see no reason why it could not be the sole source of flow. Just have your safety overflows go to the tank as well.

Hey Chris! How ya been? Yeah, Im still around, just been very busy. Havent been on RC in awhile.

In the past couple of years I have benn running that 50 gallon surge tank, it has been working flawlessly with "0" maintnence....I love it. Now that I moving things into the garage, I have all kinds of room to setup surges, refuges, holding tanks, and have all my equipment easily accessable for cleaning. I've followed this thread froma almost the beginning....
Could you please post a link to the new thread? I'm in the process of planning out a 75 gallon reef with two surge devices for primary water movement and wass wondering of you had any advice or suggestions regarding building them? As far as I have been able to determine via reading on the net, the Bourneman style surge devices seem to reduce the amount of bubbles placed into the tank.... Have you played with that design? Nick

When I get one going on it, I will certainly do so.
I'm waiting on the electrician to come over and add a sub panel and some extra outlets for the new tank, then I'll start it up. Its probably going to sit with just live rock for several months in order to build up pod populations and go through nay and all cycles that may occur. The tank will be built with my H.magnifica anemone as the priority, so the surge tanks (with no pump intakes or powerheads inside the tank) are definately desired. My only concern about the surge tanks is the salt spray from when they fire. How bad is the salt creep around your tank? Is there anything about your surge device you dont like? Nick
