Looks a bit like my stand

Your stand looks a bit like mine. (see website). Except yours is almost twice as big!

I have my ballast on the top shelf to the right of the tank. My kalk resevoir is below that. Are you sure your surge can't leak onto your ballasts?

Good work on the stand.

I like you stand!

I will be buliding the surge tank, and am going to run a bead of silicone around all of the joints to be extra sure it dosent leak, anddionally, most of the electrical wires will be ran through pvc to achieve a very clean look as well as protection against any disaster! Do it once, do it right!

Ok, sounds good.

It's the only thing that didn't seem bullet proof to me. Using the PVC as conduit is a good idea. Hopefully the ballast won't be positioned to get hit with water in case of a catastrophic failure of the surge.

I'd be interested to see how you're doing a surge when you get that done.

Keep posting the pics. You might want to do a website.

bluechunks eh?

Blue chunks? I don't think I shoud ask.

You need to change the pics on your website. The thumbnails should be jpg photos of less than 10k each. Your website takes a long time to load and I have a 1.5 mb per second connection.

Looks good though.

I made little progress today, I finished insulating and shearing the inside stand, and cabinet, plus I installed the last of the framing hardware into the stand.

Here is a test fit of the 180 sump...

UPDATE

11/28/03 - SUMP MOD: The sump is almost complete, I drilled out the side for the 1.5" bulkheads, drilled out the top for the 2" returns, and cut a larger opening to make room for the skimmers.

....here you can see that the sump is almost complete and has been filled with water for the test! I still need to drill a couple more holes for the skimmer pump, and the auto top off floats switches

WATER!

That looks great! One thought - I'd be concerned that with the skimmer effluent and return dumping in right before the pump intakes, you'd return a decent amount of microbubbles into the tank / surge tank. Have you considered anything to mimimize that ?

If I understand that question correctly - It is hard to tell if that will be a problem until it is running, but to minimize right from the start, the skimmer and tank returns will be plumbed to the left ( away from the pump intake), additionally I will run filtering media between the eggcrates.

Ah ha! I didn't realize you were planning on putting media between the eggcrate (though now that you mention it, not sure why else the eggcrate would be there!). I'd figure that the whole chamber (returns, skimmer etc) would be quite turbulent and if there were microbubbles, they'd be everywhere. But, the media in the eggcrate should do the trick.

12/03/03 - AUTO TOP OFF / SUMP ASSEMBLY: Here are some shots of the auto top off unit (not wired up). I have choose to use 2 adjustable float switches, when the water gets below the lowest float, the solenoid is turned to open, allowing the house water to flow throught the RO/DI (not installed yet) and into the tank. When the water level reaches the highest float, the solenoid will close. This will keep the solenoid from going on and off evertime the water level drops and inch. The delay is obtained by using a latching circuit relay and the engineering help of H20ENG here on RC, Thanks Chris! (also not yet installed). The solenoid idea came from Zephrant - Thanks Zephrant! http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...48#post2066548

These are some pics of the plumbing for both skimmers and the sump/fuge installed under the stand. There is alot of room under there, and it appears that Im going to use every bit of it
once done.

What kind of surge are you going with? I'm spending your money already!

UPDATE:
Electrical: I got the electrical panel cut out and installed, missing one power strip, and the wire ducts. Each GFI outlet will get wired to its own 20AMP breaker for a total of 40 amps. Power strips 1 and 3 are on breaker one, 2 and 4 are on breaker 2. The 5th power strip (not installed) will run off a timer on power strip one dedicated for one metal halide, and the fans.

RO/DI test fit....
