You should be able to buy just the shaft, it may come with the little rubber plugs. I would use a shaft, just in case.

How are these shafts breaking? I think I've read where 4 people have broke the shafts.

I have an idea.

Since we, the hobbyist, are handling the impeller much more than normal, the shafts are getting abused. The magnet is very strong. When I remove and replace the impeller I always use pliers. Without pliers, the magnet can pull the impeller out of your hands and break the shaft.

I treat all impellers with kit gloves, especially those on Mag pumps.

Where can you just buy the shaft and can it be used at all until I get one?

Always use pliers with any impeller.

You should be able to get "the shaft", no pun intended, from ASMskimmer.com, H2otropicals, or ER.

You can always go to a local hobby shop and get a comparable size stainless or carbon fiber rod to get you by.

NICE link! That's the cheapest I've seen. I wonder if they nail you with the shipping.

RTD- Looks like you just scored some better than average pumps man....Hold on to them! A buddy of mine has the same skimmer you have so I'm gonna run over and test his to see what it's pulling....

Big Baalz- Hey! It's been a while since I've seen you around...Remember the old screwing with people on chat days? Anyway, you should be able to go to a well equipped hobby store and pick up a carbon Fiber shaft to replace it.

Prance- Those unions are frikin cheap! I almost want to buy the 8" just for the hell of it...Maybe I'll use it for a salad bowl or something :-P

Yeah I got the pump going without shaft. Took a little turning off and on to get it spinning. I believe I read that you had to mess with it too mavgi. One thing I noticed is the mesh kinda doesnt lay flat on impeller base but parts of it may stand "up" sort of. Is that normal?

Let me know how it works out. I think you will be impressed with its performance. Especially, if he is gravity feeding it.

I was impressed with the performance before I even started DIYing this stuff- The H@S/Deltecs set the mark for all of us DIYers to shoot for without a doubt! While I think the bubblekings are nice, there seems to be a lot of pump problems so I tend to leave them out.

After 60 hours with the skimmer off (I was treating for cyano), I restarted it. It was completely cleaned of all coralline growth and looked brand new.

Fired it up, and with the gate valve wide open I can't get the collection cup to stop overflowing. I've thrown away 5g of water so far. I know the meds & the dead cyano byproducts are causing this.

My skimmer is white from top to bottom with microbubbles, and at least one of the Sedra pumps is leaking a fine mist of microbubbles from two spots around the impellar cover. A uniseal in the body of the skimmer is leaking them as well. Crazy mod!!!

I've got to go to work, so I might turn off the skimmer if it won't settle down in the next 30 minutes.

Turn the air down (close the taps) until things settle down, but keep running the skimmer.

I don't have air valves on my skimmer. I've removed almost 10g of watery skimmate but it is now settling down. I've had to dump in quite a bit of saltwater to keep up. I'm going to work now - and hoping for the best.

If it overflows, it'll go back in the sump anyway.
