MANATEE COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- The ill sperm whale first spotted off the Manatee County coast during the weekend has been euthanized.

Officals with Mote Marine Laboratory and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said the whale, which had been trying to beach itself, was euthanized Tuesday morning.

Marine biologists used a specially-made dart gun to inject the drug Meperidine into the mammal.

First seen on Sunday, the whale was 30 feet long and weighed 15 tons. Officials towed the whale to a beach at Fort DeSoto Park where a necropsy could be performed. Officials said the whale would be buried at the beach.

The whale had been swimming in the shallow waters along Manatee and Pinellas counties. Officials said the mammal was close to death.

Marine biologists watching the whale said euthanization was more humane than letting the animal suffer, according to Bay News 9 partner newspaper The St. Petersburg Times.

Officials said there are as many as 1,300 sperm whales in the Gulf of Mexico but rarely do they get this close to the shoreline.

the burial precess started by de-blubbering the whale with long sharp knives taking off 2x2 squares digging a really big hole and throwing peices into it

i left shortly after the start of the de-blubbering so i didnt see most of it
and they burried it like 80 ft up on the beach

Can you imagine how bad a rotting dead whale would smell?

I've never understood why whales beach themselves....

15 tonnes of rotting whale blubber. That's gonna smell great in a few days, no matter how far down you burry it.

i saw a show one time that had a similar situation with a beached whale and they decided it would be smart to use explosives to dispose of it. this whale was massive and when it exploded huge chunks of whale blubber went everywhere and smashed cars in a nearby parking lot what a mess. that is cool that you were able to participate in something like that.

I am no expert on this, but it is my understanding that oceanic animals will only beach themselves IF they are already dying or sick.

Yep, it was in Oregon. I know whenever I think of whale disposal the Department of Transportation is the FIRST thing that comes to mind ...
