corner overflow

I would like to know if anyone has ever cut out the small slits that are at or near the bottom of the overflow? I have drained my 90 gal and am starting over again since an algae problem has caused me to do so.

I have noticed may crabs have gone into this section tword the bottom by crawling up then getting washed into .25 inch partition. They get imprisoned down tword this area and I would like to just dremmel the slits out. I use a bag system in my sump and the aquarium it is a reef only no fish.

The fish will find there way into the overflow if you cut the bottom ones.
