Reef Buddies are about the best buddies you can have....
This past weekend, my reef buddies really helped me out from my tank crash. I got about 50 frags several new fish, including Tyree Soli and Oregon Blue Torts. And while I might be the only enjoying this thread, sit back....heavy picture update coming!!! First off, can anybody identify this fish? It was ordered as a male square anthias with two females. The females are definately square, but this guy doesn't appear to be. So can anyone identify? With female Just the females My favorite, the Mystery or Whitebar Wrasse Blue Spot Jawfish Clams

They look like Tonga Anthias that we get at the store sometimes. They're also called lyretail as was said earlier.

Hey Wuf -
I am about to do the same set up but with a 72x30x25 - do you have any recommendations as far as the closed loop goes from your experience thus far? Thanks! Shawn

I was just wondering if you would change the placement of the holes for the output of the closed loops or anything else. I was also curious to see if there were any issues with sand blowing around.
I am still deciding how far in towards the middle of the tank. I am also trying to decide if I should use two overflows or one. Lastly, since my tank is glass, I was thinking to put the two rear closed loop holes in the back glass rather than the bottom for structural integrity..... Thanks, Shawn

I wouldn't change anything. You want them as close to the edges as possible to prevent dead spots. Sand doesn't blow around after it gets settled, but running at 50% during the sand storm helps. This design is setup for one center overflow - the way the water gets pushed through the tank, it cycles the "dirty" water to the top-center-back, so I'd go with one big center overflow. Two holes in the rear glass would work just fine. HTH, Chris

Now that that is out of the way, how about a four month update?

Nice tank! I am actually getting the exact same tank. I had them drill a hole right about where yours is for a 1.5" bulkhead for the intake of my closed loop. What size is your intake?
I want to put bulkheads in the bottom of mine too but I am scared to drill such an expensive tank. So they drilled the one for free. Mike

1.5" for the intake, and 4 1" for the bottom ones. I did mine myself, but Mike will take care of you there too if you're so inclined. My only advice would be to replace his bulkheads with nicer ones like you'd find at Savko or the like.

thewuf, just wondering...
To further hide the piping coming out of the sand, couldn't you use some cyanoacrylate glue and sprinkle them with sand? They'd blend in pretty well, I'm guessing. About the only bad thing I could see from that, is if your fish rub against them it could scratch pretty good. After all, it's practically sandpaper. Is that acceptable? Or should something like that be avoided at all costs? |

Spiffy -
That's exactly what I was told to do, but you know reefers... I didn't have the glue at the time so I went without it - but it would be easy to fix as I could just pull the front pieces and do it. The back pieces were done with black PVC so they don't show anyway. Small rock rubble and corraline later - you'd be hard pressed to see them now.
