Hey Chris,
I don't have any more web space. But I just found some tonight on AOL. Here is the latest pic of my Acanthastrea garden with the flash. Here is another without the flash. This pic is right before I fragged the mother.

Looks wonderful Randy.
This could have been an amazing picture, but because I am to lazy to clean the glass it was ruined. You all get the idea though.

i wanna play too!
Randy just linked me to this thread. here's my pics.
in a bowl drip acclimating next to my tank. here it is a few minutes after being placed in my tank. as you can see my piece is very flat. ripe for fragging. =D here it is open. to add to the discussion. i don't think these will be readily available anytime soon. even though other rare corals have been made more available they're getting shipped in. acans are not. atleast they're not supposed to. from what i've heard, and it looks to be true, Japan has first dibs. the only ones i've seen sold were as blastomussa. blue zoos are more common because zoos are getting shipped here... lordhowensis is not. comparing them to RBTA's is insane. they got lucky by finding thousands of them in one location. that doesn't mean the same will happen to acans. it was pure luck. also, i'm not sure about the statement about Japan paying 3x wholesale to get their hands on corals. the acans on that site everyone refers to are going for <$150 US dollars. they're priced around the same range as nice red Cynaria... and the size of the colonies are much larger than any i've seen for sale in the US. just my two cents. lets keep the pics comin! you guys have some amazing piece out there. i hope that some day with some TLC that my colony can compare.

Randy:
Sweet bro, you fragged that big boy? If you need me to host some pics for you let me know. Amy: Pshhh, dude I'll buy you a scraper =). Marlooney: I think you are 100% correct. I have Ben talking to 4-5 Japanese lfs owners the past few weeks, and I have learned a whole lot. First off, they don't get them because they pay ridiculous amounts of money for them like ppl say. The average over there is 34-110$ for 40-100 head colonies. Just the other day a guy showed me 8 in stock at his store, and his prices were the most expensive. He had 2 crazy ones for 225.00 each, then the rest were like in thee 100's and a solid green for 80.00. The Japanese guys have been telling me that their wholesalers they get it from, cannot ship tot he US, as Japan cannot ship coral to the US. I think I am finally getting somewhere, and you may see some in my tank somewhere in the next few months. We';; see though nothing is def. I *may* upload and show the goodies that these guys have been mailing me of their inventory. Though it will make everyone sick! Their plate corals are insane as well man. Orange with pink rims, green/white striped from the center tot he edge with orange rim. Just nutz! |

John: That may be in the plans! One guy is trying to export to me so far, if that doesnt work out, here are two snippets of email:
I am sorry to inform you that acanthastrea lordhowensis is a protected coral and is highly illegal to export outside the country. If you were to come to Japan, you could order and purchase the coral, but returning with it to the USA might be extremely difficult. And another: Chris' request can be understood. And, there is stock in acanthastrealordhowensis. But, it can't be exported by Japanese law. It has the possibility which can be carried out if Chris comes to Japan and it is carried with the baggage. |

Chris,
That's all it will take. Just one person to get a couple of these statewide. They grow fast, and are fraggable. So keep up the good work.

The nice thing about these plans we're discussing is that this particular species of coral is not ultra-delicate so it isn't like we run the risk of threatening the coral into extinction by getting them stateside. Along with that, if we can successfully propogate them, we can continue to ensure the growth of these beauties and others can enjoy them in their reef tanks as well.
Sounds like a win/win to me. And Chris - you should be posting those pics in this thread. They are such a unique and beautiful coral.

i was thinking of carrying them out as luggage from Japan as well. i've been there twice in the last few years. i've got family over there. the problem is without the proper authorization you might get caught up. the people who check these things don't give a crap about your beloved corals. they'll throw them in the trash right in front of your face. you run a big risk here, so make sure you know that you'll be able to do it. if it does work, LMK, so i can get some the next time i visit. go ahead and post pics in this thread Chris of the acans they've shown you in japan. that's what this thread is for. and if you want, start up a new thread with pics of all the other cool corals they've shown you.
can someone link me to pixburg-reefer's first show your pics thread of blastos?
