re: death from old age?

My tank is completely healthy and happy. The fish get along, water parameters are good. Corals are healthy and growing.

I have three blue chromises. All of a sudden one disappeared for a day and this morning was just sitting on the bottom. I netted him out and he didn't even struggle or try to escape. All the other fish are happy, eating, etc. I put him in my quarantine tank and he is definitely not looking very lively.

Can fish just die of old age? Just wondering if I need to worry about this for the rest of my tank.

does he look beat up from another fish or anything in you tank that could harm him ...


i had a coral banded shrimp that took down 4 fish

Hmmm, well I DO have a coral banded shrimp. I haven't seen him in awhile, but I know he's there.

The fish is still alive, but looks like he's in the throes of death. He does have red marks on his head and right side. So maybe that is it.

Its a fact that chromis will kill their own kind.

Yes most types of Damsel fish will be aggressive towards their own kind, but you would notice that the chromis is getting picked on because of its torn fins and skid-ish behavior, since you said there was no fighting that must not have happened. Do you have any green brittle stars or large sally lightfoot crabs/emerald crabs?

He's still hanging in there, might be looking a little better. I never noticed the other two chromises picking on him. My C.B. shrimp acts pretty agressively toward the fish in the tank, so that could be it. I guess I need to figure out if he's going to pull through or if I just need to put him out of his misery. Weird.
