Equiptment???
I'm changing my 55g freshwater planted tank over to saltwater. I'm in the process of getting 80ish pounds of cured live rock off a forum member. I just ordered this Skimmer and some new lights for my TEK 4x54w
UVL Aquasun 10,000k, UVL Super Actinic 420nm, ATI Blue Plus, and a GE 6500k Went to the local fish store and bought 2x30lb bags Caribsea aragonite sand. Now here is were my questions start. I am currently using 2 canister filters with the planted tank now. 1. Should I contiue to use the canisters when I go to saltwater or will my skimmer do the job of them? Can it hurt to run them with the skimmer? 2. If I don't use them just get power heads for flow? |

You are going to need some powerheads for in tank flow also. When I had a 55 in my son's room it did real well with 2 seio 1100's. It was a softy tank though with only a couple LPS in it.
I'd use one of the canister filters to run carbon and phosphate remover in but not biological media.

1. Should I take out all the sponges in the canister filter also?
2. Is seachem purgin ok to put in there? 3. Is this skimmer worth it? 4. When I get my live rock (which is fully cured) should I put it in with no sand and let it cycle? Will it cycle being cured all ready? Last edited by painkiller1009; 12/01/2007 at 11:38 AM. |

the only downfall to that skimmer I see is the bioballs in it. I can't say that is a good thing or bad thing as I have never seen them in skimmers before. but I am sure it isn't gonna help with nitrates down the road.

Well I just talked to somthin fishy and had them change my order to the mag 350 pump for my skimmer.
I see what you mean about the bio balls and the nitrates, I didnt think about that. Well to late already ordered it, I'll have to watch that. Hopfully the bio balls are accessible for cleaning anyway |

The number one most important item that is an after thought to most people is a refugium. You can cure 95% of your future problems right now if you have one. IMO it is more important then a skimmer.

Wow more important then a skimmer. I did not know that. Thats the next thing on my list to get though. I figured a skimmer and new lights were the first thing I need to get the tank going.
I'll probably just make one out a 10 or 20g tank. I need some overflows too. |

The bioballs no longer come with the skimmer and you also get a bubble blaster with it that takes care of the micro probs. Its imo the best hot skimmer out there and very user friendly. Built like a tank as well. You could run carbon and what not in one canister but don't need both. A couple powerheads and your set. For t5 light's i'd go with from front to back, blue +, aquablue, 65ge, blue +, all have great par and will be a nice color.

Bubble blaster? Whats that? I don't see that anywhere. Do you have a link?
Yea I plan on just running the rena and not my other canister. What are some good powerheads? |
