UV glass replacement
I have 2 HQI 250 watt DE metal halide fixtures that I bought as a retro kit that never came with the uv glass. My LFS told me I really didn't need them that the bulbs I was using were uv protected. Now I have replaced the first bulbs and I'm know using Pheonix bulbs. My LFS can't find the glass and said I should just order some new glass. The problem is I can't find anyone who sells this glass. Is this "uv glass" any different than regular glass?
Does anyone know where I can get this glass??????

At the end of this thread is a post from someone with a broken UV shield over a Phoenix 14K lamp similar to yours: http://archive.reefcentral.com/forum...31#post9435531.
Only single-ended MH bulbs have UV shielding on their glass envelops. The double-ended bulbs, such as yours, do not. The DE bulbs depend on the fixture's tempered glass to block UV. For your sake, please do not use your DE lamp without a UV shield. Commercial MH lamps with broken shields have damaged people's eyes: http://www.uvlightburns.com/. |

Just regular old glass is a UV shield. Go to a glass shop and have something cut. You may want to have it tempered so it's tougher to break it.
