Question Shin Mao?!

Does anyone know anything about them? Have any of their products? I am planning on purchasing their 30 gallon reef with MH, skimmer, etc... what is your opinion of them? Know any sites online (In english) about them? I have their web site...

They list the size of their 'Powder Head' on the skimmer page... If that isn't a warning sign, I'm not sure what is.

Well, if they're made in China, I'm afraid their products may either be toxic like the toothpaste or contaminated like the Pet Food. It's possible that like those half a million tires recently recalled, their products may just well be defective.

But the name itself ... Shin Mao ... hmm ... evokes some very fond memories of my childhood when the Wu Tang clan was really hot, and they talked about the Shaolin Temple in their rap songs.

That tank looks like a rebranded Finnex tank. You may want to look into the 30 gallon Finnex tank, it may be the same thing.

I didn't mean to imply they were bad because they were Asian or anything. What I meant was that a reputable international company of any respectful size and quality would not have so many obvious errors in their advertising.

I just wouldn't trust them.

The website says right on the homepage that they have offices in Taiwan and China.

Gvtv, were you going to order from them directly, or did you find a distributor in the US?

Best thing to do is find out the return policy before you order, because if you decide to get this stuff sight unseen and you don't like it, you need to be able to return it.

I emailed them asking:
1: What is the thickness of your glass in mm?
2: Does the MH light have moonlights? On their own cord?
3: What is the circulation rating of the pump?
4: Do you have more pictures you could take/ send me of the tank? (Filtration, stand, etc)
5: What is your warranty on this product?

I got a quick response asking where I am located... but nothing since.
I would be purchasing from a LFS... they would most likely give me all my money since I know them.

Hank: Why are their products crappy? I want to know more!

Ballasts went bad,the built in skimmer was just a glorified airstone that was too noisy, the glass tops didn't even fit right without modification.FWIW I can't remember any leakers though!

Well, there is a one year warranty on all products... so I am not worried about the balasts... the skimmer is not air powered... and I am keeping it top less Good to know there aren't any leakers! Thanks!
BTW: I got an answer-
"1. 22 gal. & 30 gal. tank use 5mm thickness glass, 45gal. tank is 8mm

2. The MH light didn’t have moonlights, but we have T5 actinic blue *2, you still get same effect.

3. For every size tank have 2 pumps, for 22 gal. & 30 gal. tank – 800 liters/hour(skimmer) + 1300 liters/hour(system return)

for 45gal. tank -- 800 liters/hour(skimmer) + 1800 liters/hour(system return)

4. Enclosed is the PDF file to see picture

5. Warranty 1 year

"
Guess who the email was from? Delphin! So, Shin Mao= Delphin... how are those tanks?

Have you seen the new Finnex tank?

They look very nice and you have a few lighting options. I really like black silicon tanks and hate the distortion from most curved glass tanks.

IME with other company's warranty's are only good as the people who uphold them.

IME with Fujimoto aquariums, and Seaside Tropical fish is that they do not honor they warranty's and other then legal action you are left with no recourse. The time and effort of the lawsuit was not worth the $600 I was out in the worst case so I just bought an entire new tank and stand else where, had to transfer it all myself. Ya sure that tank which was poorly sealed and stress fractured after three days of being filled was all under warranty. Even if they would have honored there warranty, I still would have had to empty the tank, and keep all of the livestock in seperae containers until they could get me a new tank, not worth hassle IME. I'm happy with the Clear for life tank I got, which has a great rep.

FWIW the only other time I ever had a problem that was covered under warranty was with Nova and Liveaquaria, both of whom were awesome. Nova even sent a rep on a two hour drive out of his way to get me a new fixture in less then 18 hours. Now that's service.

For me the peace of mind, is not worth the discount.

I truly value each of your opinions/ experiences. If I was not getting this from a LFS that I deal with regularly, and know the people very well there... I would definitely not take the chance. But, my friend there says its a good tank, and I will take his word... if not, well, it's a hassle, but in the end he will be out $600. I found out more info, and they are very helpful online... will post all the info I recieved tomorow. As for finnex, well, I want a curved corner tank I guess to each their own Will post more tomorrow...
