Are you supposed to let the probe sit in water for a length of time before using it the first time?

Nope. Sounds like it's working to me. Maybe your not using the right type of salt? Try using Morton's salt.

Might try a very concentrated mix in a cup and see if it reads something different.

NO I did the cup thing can't believe I didn't think of it myself . I does change but its seems like it takes a lot of salt to do it . I may take some water to MS to get a second opinion .

Thanks CAPNCAPO

Depending on how much water you've got it can take a lot of salt before you see a change.

i don't know anything about the thing you're trying to use, but does it need to be calibrated?

I just got one and I am really unhappy with it. It seems to be very inconsistant, can't get it to stay calibrated for any lenght of time. Almost killed my fish because it always read 1.023 then I got the hyrod. out and sal. was 1.029. Contacted the company and they want me to pay for the shipping for them to find out what is wrong with it after I paid a pretty penny for it already. To bad there is not a JBJ forum on here. rrrrrrrrggggggggg!!!!

I also tested mine at MS and I had the same problem . My water test with this device said 1.023 when checked at MS it was at 1.030 I also almost loss some of my corals .My leather hasn't opened yet and some of my xenia is looking almost dead . All my bird nest frags are dead . I bought a refractor instead to fix the problem .
