What lights do you have?

I have been researching lights and am no closer to a decision than when I started. So, I figured I'd just ask what lights everyone has been using successfully.

What lights do you have on your tank? What size tank? What corals are you keeping?

Your choice will depend on what you want to keep in your tank.. This makes the choice for many.

My livestock requires good light so my display tank is on MH

I have a 135G tank and am using 4 x 140W VHO's powered by two IceCap 430 ballest. It gives off a lot of light but I really wish I went with a 48 inch tank as you have better choices and they are cheaper. This is a FOWLR tank.

As has been said, think about what you want to keep. If you don't ever plan on keeping SPS corals or clams, you probably don't need MH, despite how 'cool' they are. It's money you could put elsewhere.

Think about a coral you really like, and plan your tank around it a bit. Lots of really pretty corals don't need MH. The big 'zoa craze' going on right now has spawned a whole pile of tanks lit with T5 and PC lights that look great.

I like how the MH are a point source. It gives it a more natural shimmering affect. IMO. Look at Fluorescent and Mh live before you buy. Use a couple of florescent for a sunrise, sunset effect.

I use an 18 NO flourescent over a ten gallon and keep brownish/purple-ish palys, GSP, and xenia. (You'll probably want a bit more light than I've got. I've chosen bottom of the barrel of inhabitants and while I like them they are about the only things I could keep )

I'm using MH (2 x 150w) on my 72gal. I was going to for 250w but I didn't want the added heat (not the mention the expense!) LOL

I found this article helpful in deciding what was best.

http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2002-08/dw/index.php

As the article mentions, it all depends on what you want to keep. Personally, I switched from PC to halides a few years back and never regretted the decision. I keep a mix; LPS at the bottom half of the tank and SPS near the top. I ran 10K lights for a while but I recently switched to 15K XM bulbs to get better colors from my corals. The trade-off is that I wont' get the coral growth that I used to.

I'm using 452 watts of PC's over a 75g. The only corals I have are a frogspawn, brain, and some shrooms. I do have two bta's as well. One rbta and one gbta.
