DSB... on the cheap?

I know some of you have done your tanks with Toys R Us sand, but are you going for 4-6" DSB? or do I need to go with regular aquarium substrate choices?

Thanks,

you'll be fine for a DSB with silica sand or aragonite sand.

I would seed your sand with live rock and/or a cup of sand from an established aquarium. Other than that you're fine with the Toy's R Us sand.

Ok I have a line on some Southdown at $20 per 50# bag (Plus gas to get it) is it really that much better then Toys R Us sand at $6 per 50# bag?

yes, from what I understand the southdown was actually aragonite. If that is the case, If I where you I would buy up every bag I could and make a tidy profit for yourself.

I thought it might have been close to where my coworker lives (He drives 2hrs to get to our facility twice a week) but its another 3.5hrs from him =( If it was only an hour or two I probably could have talked him and the seller into meeting, but 3.5 hrs from my coworker is not going to work out well =( Oh well.

The Toys R Us sand tends to be far too coarse for a live DSB, in my opinion. Some sandblasting sand, about 150#, is more reasonable.

I agree Jonathan but also concede there are reefers out there that would kill to get hold of twenty buck Southdown.

I figure about 10 bags. But you don't want a bed entirely of Southdown. You need true LS in addition to the dead Southdown to get the bed seeded. That will cost you but I like to seed with at least 10% true LS. More if you can afford it.

Whoops, I thought you said 20 pound bags. OK, make that 5 bags but buy 10 and make some extra $$$ reselling it.
