HEY, got my new 90 tank set up! got pics!

Ok, I've just started coming onto RC and boy, have I been blown away from the members' tanks here! So, needless to say, I've been browsing and reading and reading tons of threads and then finally, decided to start my own.

I'm still relatively new to the hobby. I had a 29g noob tank before Katrina...well, needless to say its gone now. The tank was every starter's nightmare. Tap water....conditioner....no acclimation with new livestock...everything! I had a cyclone skimmer. Worked great for me...well, at least i thought i did.

Now, almost 2 years later, I've decided to get back into the hobby. Luckily, my bro-in-law had a 90g tank he wanted to get rid of. He told me if I wanted the set up, I have to drive up to his house, clean it up, and drive it back home. This was back in March.

The setup included:
90g gallon glass tank
Hood and Stand
AquaC 120 (I think)
45g sump
250w MH with 12k bulb
4 bulb VHO setup
Chiller
SIEO powerheard (model?)
Tunze powerhead (model?)
30lbs (I think) of liverock
2 five gallon buckets full of live sand (weight?)
Mag 5 skimmer pump
R/O DI Unit 100g 24hr
And other misc things…

Yes….Christmas came early for me this year! Thanks a TON bro! I drove my butt 1 hour to Baton Rouge and picked it up that weekend!
Two months of planning and planning …finally got me to this.

These are shots of the tank with just the VHOs on. 2 actinics and 2 daylights.

The I got more live rock from my cousin who had some laying around outside his house.
He has his own tank that is fully stocked…so some to spare for me!

Now, I just saw some diatoms begin to build up on the rocks…

My cuz told me its time for a water change and my cycling is done!

These pics come from my Palm Treo…don’t have a digital camera ( a good one at least) yet.
I’ll take pics of my setup after I get a digital camera.

if the rock was laying around outside it is no longer "live" you are going to need to "seed" to make it live again with some actual live rock from a LFS.

Yea, I was going to call it base rock .....but its too pretty to call it base rock....lol!
I have some coralline algae on it, but I still need to get some more live rock from my lfs.
My cuz will also hook me up with some LR from his existing tank for seeding. He lives almost as far as my bro-in-law... just need to make that trip over there.

Looking good so far. Make sure you take your time this time and don't repeat the same mistakes

I'd also check those rock pieces to see how sturdy they are. A few of them look like they are pretty unstable.

Welcome back!

U ain't kiddin....I spent soo much money the first time....

Yea, the ones to the right needs to be tweaked a lil.
I'll do that once I get some real LR into the tank.

What would be a good coral to start with?
I'm thinking a few zoas and shrooms for the lower part of the tank.

What did you guys/gals started out with?

I can't believe the guy had live rock laying around outside the house.. that stuff is like gold around here! $7.99 a pound. I got a heck of a deal on about 100lb of live rock though. Guy I work with sold it to me with a fox coral, a huge clarkie, 5 shrimp, and some other stuff for $250 bucks!

I'd recommend creating some more openings/caves in the pile on the left. Other than that, things look great! Congrats on getting that sweet setup from your bro.

Really depends on what you like. Mushrooms and ricordeas are very hardy. Xenia is popular although I don't like it too much. The pulsing xenia is kinda cool though. Zoas would probably be okay too.

I would stay away from most corals unitl you go through your diatom and algae blooms. Once that cycles you would probably be okay putting in some LPS stuff. I would def wait on SPS for a good while until everything levels out.

Congrats Looking forward to seeing your tank up and going!

oh god, xenias....the first thing I bought in my 29g. took over the whole left side of my tank! I loved the way it pulsed in the wavy waters...but man....the thing SPREADS!
Is there a way of containing xenia spread?

Ok, I got diatoms 2 days ago. After diatoms, I heard that I'll get an algae bloom? is that tru? what color algae should I be looking for? How long will it last?

LoL... yea they spread... you can kill them or take them out of the tank... if you have a good LFS you may be able to trade them for supplies or credit.

Yea, you'll get varying degrees of algae. Really depends on your tank. Diatoms will probably be the worst of it. I would check your parameters. Once they are good.. start adding a clean up crew to help eat the algae and diatoms. Astrea snails are great for that.

Me too!! I love how they sway with the current!!
But those frogspawn and hairy mushrooms waged war with each other ever since they started spreading closer and closer to each other. I think the frogspawn is winning, cuz I see the shrooms starting to pull away.

The tank is looking really good. Are you breaking it down to move to your new house or to get rid of it?

Good news is that my bro is going to stay at my current home. I'll have a brand new setup at my new house, and transfer everything over, then break down the tank...salvage what I can, and sell the rest.
I want to get a 180g island tank. I guess you call it that, with all 4 sides viewable.

That's going to look awesome. Glad to hear the wife's letting you get to keep everything. A friend of mine used to keep tanks when he was in college, now his wife doesn't want one in the house.
