where to get seahorses...
i'm looking into starting either a 6 or 12 gallon nano tank....
i was wondering where the best place to get pygmies would be, or are there any suggestions to a diff type of seahorse? |

...i just realized that the dwarf seahorses only get an inch long and they need to be fed live baby brine...i don't really have a way to raise the shrimp...so any suggestions on a specific type of horse?

There are no other seahorses available in the United States that I would recommend for 12 gallons or less. You are looking at 30 gallons or more for the typically available species.

Breviceps or capensis could be kept in a 12g, but you will need a chiller to keep the water in the 60s (F).

I would not keep capensis in a 12 gallon because they are bottom dwellers and need a lot more sandbed than a 12 gallon would provide in order to be happy. You might be able to do breviceps; if you could keep the temps down; but they aren't available in the U.S. right now.

Tank raised Kellogi seahorses seem to work. I've had three in my 24 gallon nano for a year now. Before that I had two in my 12 gallon nano at work and had that for about a year as well. Since they're tank raised, you can feed them frozen brine shrimp or krill. Just make sure you some live rock with a lot of crevices for them to hook their tails around. Look around on e-bay, that's where I got mine.

Agreed, 12g is a bit small, 24 is ok, but 50 is perfect for a pair.
Dwarf Seahorses that is. |
