You can pretty much say that NOTHING is NEEDED.

I would def say that a UV is NOT needed. Infact I dont have one, dont want one, never intend on buying one. HTH

If anything, it's more useful if you are keeping ich-prone fragile fishes... not so much with corals.... please correct me if I'm mistaken.

does UV eliminate algae spore in the water therefore your water is clearer so the light can penetrate deeper to the coral and make them grow faster???

I will say that I love my UV sterilizer. When it was offline for about a month I had so many buble algae appear, when it went back online no new ones have formed

I wont be without it

A UV sterilizer is a good idea if you want a lot of fish, as for the corals...not needed.

I like haveing a UV on line more than not. Clearer water IMO. That said, mine is hanging on the wall a waiting reconnection after a repair.

Upon getting off my ars and reconnecting it, I am planning to run it only during lights off to minimize heat transfer. And, it does transfer heat to your water.

There are pro's and cons of every device we can use on our tanks. May you should revise the question and ask about the pro's and con's of UV on a tank.

Pro- Clearer water

Con- add's heat

anyone else care to add some more pro's and cons?

pro- can be used to eliminate pathogens to both corals and fish

Con- needs to be specifically set up and requires frequent (and expensive) upkeep.

i say not needed since it only helps to reduce certain things and not eliminate them.
