My fuge smells gross!

I have a small outbreak of cyano, and I think something must have gone down there and died. It smells like the time I got a dead gorgian in shipment- that nasty rotten flesh smell. I took out about half the macro algae, because it had weird slimey coat and bubbly film on the top. I thinking about taking the rest out, and washing it off with tank water or something to get the rest of the cyano out.

Is this going to mess up my phosphates or nitrates levels up?

Should I temporarily add a powerhead to the fuge to keep the cyano away?

I would do just that, stop the flow to and from the sump during this process however, remove what you can get at and see if you can find the issue... worst case: rinse all the macro out in tank water and dump, clean out the refuge completely and put back in only what you know is ok. Refill with new salt water and bring it back online...

Remember the idea of the sump is to grow what you do not want growing upstairs but it should not stink..

what is your flow rate and volume?

Do you mean for the sytem or the fuge only?

Not sure about flow for sump, but the tank is 120, sump is 35, and the fuge is a 20gal tall.

you have both a sump and a refuge?

how big is the return pump from the fuge to display?

Sometimes, a surface film can develop and smell badly. Some paper towels will help with that. I agree that cleaning the macroalgae a bit might help, too.

The the fuge water flows to pump side the sump through a 1.5" hose.

The macro keeps rising to the top and runs slightly over the baffle, is there a way to keep it from doing that? Is that causing any problems?

just need the model number of your return pump...

Just trim the macro back to stop the "running over" problem. It probably is not hurting a thing however.

I would do the paper towel thing first (no need sending any of this gunk to display). See if the odor goes down or away...

If that is a mag24, I doubt flow is the problem, figuring a mag9 would be more than adequate

My fuge/sump smelled funky earlier today. I emptied/cleaned the skimmer and the sock, and it doesn't smell now.
