$$$ saver bulbs

i saw these bulbs in the DIY shop here. itsa philips SL bulb. those energy savers. so i read the specs of the 14w

the 14w is said to be equivalent to 75w. its lumen is 710.

the 12w on the other hand is equal output to a 60w. its lumen is 620.

can these be used in any way, like either a main light system or a supplementary support?

any ideas?

The problem with these lights is depth. They just don't penetrate and give the intensity needed for more corals.

They work great for sumps/refugiums of 18" deep or less.

The other thing to consider is bulb temperature. They typically run at 2700K, which will be very yellow for your display tank. Melev compared two of these bulbs one, with a 5100K rating and another with a 2700K rating. The 5100K rating did much better. It produces a decent white looking light also.

These may work great for a sump, but I don't advise using them on even a FO display.
