Fed Up with LFS!
I've been looking around for emeral crabs and a refractometer for WEEKS now! every LFS that i find either does not carry them or is freshly sold out of them!
I found a Big Al's in my travels yesterday and stopped in. I asked one of the sales people if they had any Emeral crabs, the guy looked at me like I had three heads and asked me why i wanted them? I told him that i had a Bubble algea problem that i didn't want to get out of control. his answer was "What's bubble Algea?" And he couldn't even tell me what a refractometer was! NO ONE seems to know what they are up here! So much for helpfull sales people. Michelle

It saddens me to see so many LFS that aren't run very well. We have 3 LFS here in town (not including Chain stores). Two of them are OK, the third is great! It is on the other side of town for me, but I don't mind driving to get good service and sound advice. Check local aquarium clubs to see where they think good places to shop are (besides online). The LFS I frequent will order anything you want if he doesn't have it. It might take a little while to get it in, but you get what you want. I had them order a flame angel for me. I got one and then kept it for another 3 weeks to besure that it would eat and survive. While it was at the shop, he had a dozen people offer him money for it, but he kept it until I could get it. Some argue that I have spent more money because I buy from my LFS, but I feel that I am just paying for good service while supporting a local business. Just my thoughts...

I agree. I'd much rather buy from my LFS, as long as they are a good one. Seems like there is a shortage of good ones though. We have two good ones and two BAD ones. The bad ones still do business though.

I'm not one of those people who order things online...to tell you the truth, I've NEVER ordered anything online.
There is one store that's aover an hour away that i visited when he first opened. I guess i should go and see him again. Actually, i think he's a member here on RC.

I would, but it's such a hassle. Most of the sites that I've seen are american, with american pricing.

Poukie - head to aquariumpros.ca and you'll find a lot of discussion on local Ontario shops. There's also a few mail order houses in Ont/Que that have good reputations, several of which are AP sponsors.

I see you're from Toronto. Visit www.mops.ca and see if they have what you need. It's mail order and good service. You are right though, our options for mail order are somewhat limited.
