where do you dump your saltwater?

I friend and I had a dispute whether it was legal or not to dump your water into open drains. I dump my old water into a bathroom bathtub that no uses and have tape water delute and rinse thru. Just curiouse on where you guys dump your water and is it alright to dump your water outside down the city drain? thx

Down the drain it goes. Then I rinse well with fresh water.

Can it really be that much worse than salted water used for cooking pasta as far as the treatment plant goes? I'm sure a lot more pasta water goes down the drain daily than tank water. I can't imagine any living things making it through the treatment plant.

The storm drain is a no-no though this close to the gulf.

I dump it outside (not on my grass!). It's not worth taking a risk and corroding my sewer pipes.

SHHHH! don't tell the TRPA (they're our corrupt self appointed enviro cops) but during the winter I use it to help melt the ice on the walkway. But if they found out they'd fine me.

Bailey, thanks for the tip! I try to throw mine in a little different spot each time, because repeated saltwater washdowns of your grass will kill it. I forget which war, may have been the Revolutionary war? But the enemy doused the crops with saltwater which killed it. History buffs confirm??? Anyway, I've been throwing it in front of my house on the lawn, and the septic pipe is right under there. Never thought of it rusting the pipe!

I started by taking 5 gallon buckets to the curb and dumping them in the gutter, I have a new concrete driveway and nowhere on my property that is not landscaped and planted, so nowhere to dump safely except the curb. I thought maybe someone would report me to the greenpeace freaks or start picketing my house, so now I just dump my 5 gallons a week down my drain. I cant think of a reason why it would be illegal or any worse than the cleaning chemicals we use to clean the sink and toilets with.

I usually dump mine down the bath tub drain, right before its weekly scrub down. Sometimes I dump it down the toilet bowl too. Jon

Don't most gutters lead to storm drains, and don't most storm drains lead to the ocean? That would be ironic to be fined for dumping saltwater into the ocean, lol.

Thanks for the stories guys. I had some concerns regarding dumping it down my drains. Can I get a fellow reefer who work as or has some plumbing knowledge to state if the saltwater would rust or corode the pipes.

I live in California and we can't dump it, we have to drink it...... Just kidding, down the drain it goes for me as well. But don't be suprised if you see me on America's Most Wanted for polluting.

Yeah I am less than 3 miles from the ocean along a river basin and I thought about the irony of being busted for dumping saltwater into the ocean. But its dirty saltwater, and Im sure some busybody would complain eventually, and it looks funny to be dumping a bucket into the gutter, I probably do more harm dumping it into my drain to let the wastewater treatment plant handle it, but down the drain it goes.

Oh and as long as you are using the sink you dump it in on a regular basis, I wouldnt worry about corrosion, you will wash enough fresh water and detergent down your drain to push that minor amount of saltwater into the city system, and its going to be diluted enough by that point to be harmless.

I'm afriad I'm gonna release some sort of invasive species into the ecosystem when I dump my SW out. I know lots of algae are FW and SW tolerant.

if you dump salt water down your drain once and a while im sure it will be flushed out of the pipe by fresh water in between. besides, most of the pipes have a downward pitch so the water drains rather than sit there. just think of all the water that has passed through the pipes before you ever thought of putting salt wwater down there....fresh water will corrode metal also....flush the salt and dont look back.............im waiting for the thread...
.......MY PIPES ARE RUSTED AND I CANT GET RID OF MY OLD WATER.!!!!!ANY ONE HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM????????
