Wanted: Big Toadstool leather

I need a big toadstool leather with long polyps to be the centerpiece of my new tank. If you have one that has outgrown your tank please let me know via email or PM.

Thanks
Vince

Vince,

I've got that long polyp leather I told you about but it is attached to a base rock and unless there is some way to get it off without deconstructing my rock work its going to have to stay there. Anyone have any suggestions?

I've never fragged them, but from what everyone says you can take a sharp razor blade to it and cut off as much as you want. All pieces are totipotent and can grow back into a full colony again. You can probably find a tutorial if you do a google search for it; it's supposed to be pretty easy, but expect a lot of slime.

This thing is a thick as my arm. Can it be done the same way I wonder? If I can just cut it off at the base that would be great.

Charlie how's life on the river? I got rid of that dog Coralife a long time ago. Went deltec and never looked back!

I know that the leather can be cut, with rasor, and it "should attach well"
( I just never got one to attach well after i fragged one) ( Of course that was before, I found reef central! ( and marvin)
I modded a CL 220.... IMHO it is = to an ap 600.. little better since i "made it"
Anger+time+ cost of different pumps+glue/air stone/pump+2-1/2 tube for throat = alot more than ap600 ( you did right!) (I just like to play with skimmmers)

Eric,
I think the best option is to leave it alone. I have fragged leathers before with great success but I only cut pieces off them. Cutting it off at the base would be risky. The only way to do it right is to take the coral and the rock it is attached to and use a hammer and chisel. But as you mentioned this will entail major rockwork. Maybe this is the right time to give your tank a facelift.

In theory that should work, but I'd try asking in one of the larger forums to see if anyone has actually fragged a large leather that way and get some advise from them.

Not likely a this time. When I move to a house but not till then barring any other issues!

I'll have to float things around on another sub board here.

Vince I have a large "Devils Hand" that is splitting, kind of in same boat as Eric as it is attached to two different rocks , but when it finishes splitting I should be able to remove one rock. How is that Milli?

Check with Cindy...her's isn't huge, but she has fragged it for people...it does take quite a bit of her tank though, enough for her lion fish to hide under...maybe she can cut a whole ear off for ya Vince...I know that the piece she gave to me attached to a small piece of rubble I put it against in my sump in a day or so...now I just gotta find a spot in the tank where it is happy...

Jason,
That leather came from me as well as most of her corals. That leather is the centerpiece of her tank. I traded that whole setup for a macaw.

Why not try to get a piece of if back from her...return it to it's "home"... I'm sure she wouldn't mind...

Wink

Hey Vince! I'd be happy to cut a big piece off for you if you'd like! :O) If we can cut it in half, that'll work too.

Cindy, I appreciate the offer but cutting it in half is too risky. That leather has been around for a while. Just take care of it. I'll find one sooner or later.

If your still loookin I have a green polyped toadstool thats over a foot in diameter. Im not getting rid of it but I got a friend that has 1 about the same size & hes wanting to get rid of his. Were in Nashville TN Im sure he would ship it. Were having a frag swap on the 19 of this month if anyone from your club is coming this way we could send it back with them. Just a thought.

Awww, it's too bad we don't have any long weekends coming up. Jason and I usually go to Nashville to visit his parents on extended weekends.

Eyebedam Nashville is a little far but thanks for the info. Cindy I bought a beautiful green toadstool about half the size of your leather. If you want to trade let me know. This will give you a lot more room in your tank. I will also upgrade your lights to 400 watts as part of the trade.
