Is it Ok to use a new toothbrush inside a reef tank?? I just wondered it they contain any negitive chemicals. I wanted to try to scrub some algae off the side of a clam that is attached to the rock work. Sorry for the duh question.

I use a toothbrush for all of my tanks. No problems for me either.

I guess I just a little over cautious. I am having a hair algae die off and my tank is covered with slime (I have never had this happen). The hair algea looks like it's dissolving and is leaving a slime everywhere in my tank (sump, glass, corals, rocks). At least I think the slime is from the HA. This has not been a good month for my tank

I hope not for your sake (dinos). Do not ever brush or pull the HA off in the tank. Every little piece that is left floating will plant itself and grow.

Wind and yank on the long stuff. Then your cleaning crew will eat the shorter stuff that remains. The long stuff seems to be tough and unappetizing to them.

it is HA I promise. The long slime strands are coming right off the HA. I was going to use the toothbrush to remove some red string algae from the side of the clam. The HA was a little off topic. It does look like it dissolving and is sliming at the same time.

try this diy for hair algae removal
sorry no pics
drill a small hole in the middle of the bristles removing a section of them on a tooth brush, large enough to insert a small piece of tubing in(use tubing larger than air tubing so it does not clog). Now when you doing a water change scrub the rocks with the brush and create suction to remove dirty water and the hairalgae through the center of the brush out the tube.

no question is a stupid question. Especially in this hobby. I use three different tooth brushs and what i did was i took a lighter and heated up the necks on each one to bend them in diff directions. It works great.
