Lightbulb

There are two different "cycles" that are referred to, in this thread.

1. Concrete (aragocrete reef rocks or frag plugs) has a curing cycle that needs to be completed prior to placement in an aquarium, as un-cured concrete produces alkalinity that raises pH.

2. Developing denitrifying bacteria for biological filtration in an aquarium is another "cycle" that everyone should be familiar with.

These two "cycles" are different and shouldn't be confused.

Absolutely correct, provided it's really dry. I know of a LFS that sells base rock that they've pulled out of tanks they maintain for customers, bleach out and sell as dead base rock. The pieces sometimes have a faint bleach smell, and aren't 100% dry. So the moral here is make sure it's dead and dry and you'll be just fine. The guys at this store would give me pieces of this rock for next to nothing, and I would just soak it in fw for a while, and really dry it, or break it up for frag mounts. The slate tiles at about 9 cents each and nice uniform size turned out to be much less work.

How long would you suggest I cure my DIY plugs made of hydraulic cement? The are currently in the back of my commode. TIA.

Most of the alkalinity should be gone after 30 days.
