you could just use a 1"sheet foam insulation to insulate the pipes.
outline the pipes with wood straping and screw the foam to that.
sorry to hear about the paint spill i hate when tha happens drives me nuts as well

Marc, it might be to late but I would put a few coats of polyurathane down on the stand before I put the tank on it if possible.

Looks great!

Marc you could just use some 1/2" shims to bring the brackets away from the wall and this would allow you to have the space you need to wrap the pipes. I would go ahead and mount the pipes to the wall with the shims in place and install the insulation. Where there are mounting straps simply notch the opening out with a pair of scissors or utility knife. Some of the products have a self sticking seem to hold it together while some you have to use a glue but black duct tape works perfect if you are using a foam/rubber type insulation like this.

Home Depot sells Frost King which would work perfect for your application. It's only 3/8" wall and comes in 4-3' lengths for $4.97 for 3/4" pipe. Their catalog number is #402605 and it looks like this.

Marc also if you still plan to do this maybe just tap into the cold line running to the water heater before you insulate the pipes. Maybe installing a shut-off valve on the tap so you can come back later and install the RO/DI unit after you have your walls up incase your not sure where you want to put it. This would also also allow you to shut-off the RO/DI for replacement or maintenance without having to shut-off the whole house. Just a thought.

I guess I'll shut up now or you'll never get done.

Thanks for the spacer idea! That will work easily enough.

Regarding the coldwater feed to the Ro/Di unit, you'll see a faucet with a hosebib connection on the coldwater side that eventually goes into the water heater. So I've got the water source, plus a way to shut it off. However, looking at the faucet, it doesn't seem well-built to me. (Fisher Price, anyone?) When you open the valve, the opening isn't that large, either.

Basically, I don't know if I'll get enough flow to justify moving my unit. Additionally, I'd put a simple ball-valve on the 1/4" tubing leading to the unit because those are very easy to use.

I'm over here, waiting for the tank move to begin.

Final shots:

You can see how I painted the edges of the walls that will be up against the tank. The one on the left is the only one that needed it, as the one on the right will be up against the back of the overflow. Since I don't really want/need algae growing in the overflow, I painted it black as well.

Looking good Marc. I'm actually taking a break from framing in my basement. Top and bottom plate of the wall that will house a small in-wall tank just cut so this thread has come in handy. I purchased the Hi-rock over a year and a half ago and today you can't tell the difference in my tank from that rock and live rock. Couple of questions if I may:

1. I picked up about leaving some room to reach the front of the glass. what type of moulding do people use to cover the gap when looking at the tank? I would like tank to sit flush with wall.

2. Where you painted the small portion of wall black, is that just wood with mud or did you actually uae a piece of sheetrock?

Thanks and good luck with the rest of the set-up.

Andre

All humor aside, Marc...you're an animal! Theres no way I could have gotten as much done as you did in such a short period of time, w/o going insane. Good job, hope you are rewarding yourself appropriately from time to time w/ a well earned beer.

Marc, you are amazing. I wish I had 1/2 the energy that you do. My enthusiasm is up there, but my knowledge and time and energy just aren't up to par. Do you do housecalls? We could feed and beer you.

Melev, I wish I had read this post before I went on vaction. I had a 3 hr layover in DFW yesterday. I know that is not enough time, but I sure would have liked to see your project.

Funny flight; spend 17 min (+/-) ascending to cruising altitude before descending for landing (about a 35min flight); which basically means the flight is a parabola.

You think that's funny, you should try island hopping in Hawaii, its a 15 min flight. I'm not enven sure that the parabola max even reaches cruising altitude.
