Low salinity for FOwLR
Is it detrimental to the bacteria in live rock to keep a specific gravity of 1.018 or just a low SG overall?

I would keep it no less than 1.022.

I hate asking a question rather than answering them but why would you want to keep the salinity so low?
Everything I have read says that for a fish only system you want to keep it 1.021-23. Low salinity is good to keep the chance of diesase of infection in check but I think 1.018 is to low and will do more harm than good.

I keep my FOLR pretty low (1.021) - easier breathing for my fish.

NO....
I believe most of those thought were old wises tales. In general keep your tank at normal salinities, 1.024-26. Thats whats found in the oceans and why not keep it like that in your tank. If you think lowering your salinity has any impact on disease you'll need to lower it to 1.009-1.010 thats where Ich is susceptable. Keeping your salinity at 1.018 is doing nothing but saving you money on salt and possbily increasing the amount of O2 in the water, but it should not any impact on bacteria. Why may i ask are you considering doing this?
