Lr bought but coming in 2 different shippments
Hello all, I just bought some LR (50lbs Vanuantu and 35lbs Marshall Island)online for my 90gal pent. The Vanuantu is coming in tonight (2/9/07) my tank is ready with RODI water/Salinity 1.024/Temp 79/live sand. My question is, I will putting in My Vanuantu rock in tonight and the Marshall Island rock doesn't come in until 2/14/07. Should I do a water change prior to the Marshall rock arrival or just leave it until the Marshall rock comes in and then just add the Marshall rock and count that as the begining as my cycle and start testing my parmeters? Thanks for the help.
Jack

The primary reason for doing a water change before adding the second shipment would be to ruduce the ammonia level in order to preserve some of the more fragile life that might otherwise die by going through the cycle. Unless the second shipment is supposed to be fully cured (or as close to it as shipped rock can be), I would just leave everything alone and let the cycle proceed naturally.

Your first shipment will cause a cycle. So, as soon as you test for amonia I would do a partial water change in order to keep most of the remaing life ALIVE . And then same process when you get your second shipment.

I would do small water changes(10%) a week throughout the cycle regardless of rock additions. Sounds like you are getting/paying for some nice rock, you want to preserve as much life as possible.
Who did you decide to go with? let us know what you think when you get it.

Hello all, thanks for the advice. The company I went with was livestockusa.com and the Vanuatu rock I got was awesome. It was almost show room quality. Lots of color and even though it had a long journey there was still some life on it. I ordered 50lbs and it came as one huge rock with a couple of smaller flat plate like pieces that I have to figure out what to do with but right now there are in the tank and will be doing my testing every other day and when my levels go up a bit I will do a 10%-15%water change. I'll get the Marshall Island rock on 2/14/07 and let you know what that is like. Does anyone have a thought on this, I live where I have you use a septic system and don't want to disgaurd the waste water do the drain, what should I do with it?

I had the same concern with my septic tank. I was told that as long as you use RID-X once a month or two ( which you should be anyways) you will be okay.
Those flat pieces you got will make some great shelves.
