Any large angels safe for a reef tank???
I have an established 75 gallon reef tank and would like to know if there are any large angels that would be reef safe. I would really love to try and emperor.
I have lots of mushrooms, plate and bubble coral, brain, colt, polyps. Thanks, Dave |

say goodbye to ur polyps and ur lps are at risk too. there is no such thing as a 100% reef safe angel. check out pwin's gallery. it give us all hope

A 75 gallon is too small for an emperor long term (a juvenile might be fine but an adult wouldn't be). Most large angels get too big for a tank that size.
Also, achillesheel is right, your LPS and polyps would be at risk.

my asfur seems fine so far with polyps and softies..but like what was mentioned..your tank size is not adequate to maintain and adult for very long.

actually, occasionally a swallowtail has been known to pick at clams & lps, rare though. ive caught my G,semifasciatus picking at one of my maximas. these do tend to be the safest. my favorites actually

the majestic angel(p.navarchus) seems to be quite popular among reefers. it gets to be about 9" and i know of several people who have had some success with them. but at their own risk. they knew there was a possibilty that it would do damage and they might have to get rid of them someday.

If you have alot of LR and fish that aren't over-aggressive, a regal would be your best bet for a large angel. Gregory Schiemer actually states that he thinks that it is the best large angel for reef tanks. He gives his accounts with his in the archives at advancedaquarist.com. The mushrooms would probably be toast, but your lps would have a good chance. Good Luck!!

pomacs are on average, 90% sponge eaters.. the remainder is mostly made up of algae.. most folks find most large angels are fine with many different corals. the pygmys are a totally different story..
but again,,unless there's an upgrade planned within the next couple years,,the fish will be cramped. |
