I wouldn't trust anything but the Ebo Jager heaters. Cheap and reliable.

Good luck!

I have been using Via Aqua Titaniums for several years with excellent results. The seperate controller and temp sensor is very accurate and repeatable. I gave up on glass heaters Jager included years ago.

I agree with AZDR. Working in a LFS I saw and felt what could happen with glass heaters. I have used and like the titaniums and I also like the Visi-Therm stealth heaters. I would also recommend using 2 heaters if you can. I haven't seen a heater yet that won't fail and having a backup in place is a good practice.

hagen visi-therm stealth. So far no complaints. A lot of planted tank guys use them.

Thanks to all who replied. I think I'll go with the visi-therm since I want to fully submerge the heater in the sump.

ryguan, since you're in the bay area, i am too, do you need a heater? i have heaters on my tanks, but truthfully, they've never come on. my tank temps stay between 77 to 80 all year round. during the warmer days, i put a fan over my sump to keep the temp no higher than 82. btw, i'm using visitherm.

CruzinKim,

I live in south SF so the weather is always cool (50s to 60s), especially inside the house. Might just need a 100w heater.

I prefer the jaeger heater, it says on the box that it isn't fully submersible but it actually is I work at a store and talked to the rep (it's a liability issue for stupid people)
I'm not a huge fan of the visi therm, but either way most heaters need to be re-calibrated

Recalibration

The fact that the Eheim Jager heaters can be recalibrated is a plus.

I also like the Fluval Tronic heaters because they have rubber guards on both ends of their glass tubes and can be used on the bottom of a sump without suction cups.

I do recommend a temperature controller for safety and an analog thermometer for calibration.

Ebo jaeger -- have had one running for literally 10 years! Only problem was the suction cup mounts got a little brittle.

I use ebo jager, rena cal, and finnex titanium. The finnes had the shortest life span... go figure. The glass heaters are prone to breaking if you are rough with them but will function for years. I highly recommed the use of an external controller/thermostat though.
